Then He said  to Them All, " If Anyone Desires to Come After Me, Let Him Deny Himself, and Take Up His Cross Daily and Follow Me." Luke 9:23

Shared Ministries

At Ascension we have many opportunities for shared ministry that provide something for everyone to be actively involved.

Whether your gifts lead you to volunteer in church leadership roles such as on church council or as a committee chair,  or you wish to be involved with worship,  there always is a place for you.

Church Life

There are many opportunities for growing at Ascension through fellowship and service.

Church Leadership

  • Opportunities to serve in leadership and planning are available through service with a variety of committees, such as Church Life, Learning, Worship/Music, or Church Council.

Worship Service Volunteer Opportunities

  • Lay participation in worship is a foundational aspect of Lutheranism.  From reading the scriptural lessons for the service; acting as worship assistant to the minister; greeting and ushering; operating the sanctuary computer for multi-media during worship or baking the bread we use for communion.

Adult Bible Study and Prayer

  • Men's Prayer, Bible Discussion and Breakfast Group - Men meet at church 8 am every Saturday for prayer, Bible study and breakfast.
  • Woman's Bible Study - Mondays at 10:00 am

Fellowship

  • Congregational Fellowship - Social events such as game playing, movie nights, chili cook-offs, church picnic, ice cream social and potluck dinners are several times a year and are a great way to get to know church members.
  • Prime Timers -  Those in the prime of their lives enjoy dinners, plays, Churchill Downs and other outings once a month.
  • Super Seniors - Thursdays at 10:00 am
  • African Fellowship - Sundays at 3:00 pm
  • Annual Car, Truck and Bike Show - This event is open to the public and usually is Labor Day weekend on the grounds of the church.  It is used as a fundraiser for Ascension youth activities.
  • Sew Much Fun - Meets the 2nd Monday of the month from 1 - 3 pm
  • Supper Groups - For couples and singles who love good food and fellowship, supper groups of 8 to 10 meet about once a month in homes and restaurants. New groups are formed every 4 to 5 months.
  • Youth Activities - Led by our Youth Director, Ascension has an active ministry for youth of all ages.

Youth Ministry

Ascension has an active ministry to youth of all ages, led by our youth director Ulrike White.

During our regular 10:45 am Sunday worship service we often include a youth message. A staffed nursery is available for ages birth to 5 years old.

We have an active Sunday School Program 9:30 am - 10:30 am, with classes suitable for all age groups.

  • First Communion: Children in the 4th or 5th grade receive 3 brief in preparation for receiving first communion.
  • Confirmation: Middle school youth take a 2 year study program with local trips, social activities and community service that prepares them for confirmation and for being church members.
  • Vacation Bible School is offered for children ages 3 - 11 during the summer.
  • Middle school youth have a two-year study program that includes local trips, social activities and community service that prepares them for confirmation and active membership in the church.
  • High-school students have their own age appropriate bible study groups, activities and service projects they are involved in.  They participate in Sunday morning "Teen Hour" at 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. that consists of Bible study discussions, outings, community service and other activities.

Music

The music at Ascension plays a special and important role in worship.

We have a full choir and instrumentalists from our membership and the community who play at worship services.

In addition, guest musicians often are featured during worship services, or perform outside of worship times as a community event to which all are welcome.
